Recycled scrap data centers

22.01.2019
As the digital economy accelerates, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain global data centers at lower temperatures, but submerged steel modules can be an unexpected solution.

Off the coast of the Orkney Islands in Scotland, Microsoft has become a pioneer of a new type of data center of a new generation that can change the flow of Internet traffic around the world. The project, called Natick, aims to speed up Internet connectivity in coastal cities and solve the growing problem of overheating servers, placing them in the icy depths of the seabed.

Conventional data centers require huge warehouses that take up a lot of space. According to the United Nations, about 40% of the world's population currently lives within 100 kilometers of the coast, where land is very expensive. In this regard, Microsoft expects that the development of underwater data centers will be vital to meet the growing demand for faster Internet connectivity.
